Google Apps for Education FAQ’s

CUSD Google Apps for Education account (Drive, Sites, Groups, etc) should be used for school purposes only and should not be used for personal use.


  1. Is it required for my students to have a Google G Suite for Education account?

    • It is recommended, but not required. If you would like to opt-out of a Google account for your student, you can begin the process at this link.

  2. What is the difference between School Loop and Google G Suite for Education?

    • School Loop is still being used as the home/school communication vehicle. Teachers will continue to post assignments, grades, etc in School Loop. G Suite for Education is an educational tool to support the Common Core State Standards by allowing collaboration among students and quicker feedback, both from other students and teachers. It will also help save quite a bit of paper in the process.

  3. How are student accounts protected?

    • G Suite for Education uses Google's highest form of security to protect all information maintained in the system. However, as was just proven by the security breach Home Depot experienced, there are entities that want to do others harm. We cannot guarantee that something similar will never happen, but since hacking into our Google accounts and reading essays written by students isn't profitable, the chances are incredibly minute that someone would take the time to do so.

  4. Will any of the google docs created by students be accessible on the public domain?  

    • Elementary students are only able to share docs with people who have Google accounts in and certain domains that have been explicitly whitelisted by the district. Secondary students can publicly share and publish files to the web and make files visible to the world as public or unlisted files.

  5. Can the CUSD Google Administrators view the Google search log from home activity if their child forgets to sign out of their account at school and another family member gets on the student’s CUSD Chromebook and uses Google to search?

    • Yes. When a CUSD student logs into any Chromebook with their “” account, a small program automatically launches to record and filter each website the student visits. If another family member begins browsing under the CUSD student’s account, that browsing data would be saved as if it were the CUSD student using the Chromebook.

  6. Will the district be able to access and read my child's emails?

    • Yes. All students have access to email in G Suite for Education and all email is archived for legal purposes. Elementary and middle school students can only send email to and receive email from other accounts and those accounts that have been explicitly whitelisted by the district. High school students can send email to and receive email from any account, as long as that account has not been explicitly blacklisted by the district. All incoming and outgoing student email is filtered for appropriate content and rejected if inappropriate content is detected.

  7. When my child signs on to a district computer, will the district be able to see the websites he/she visits and what they were doing there?

    • Yes. Anything done on the district’s network by ANY user can be reviewed by the District.

  8. Will the district have access to my child’s Google G Suite for Education password?

    • District staff can not see any user’s G Suite for Education password, however district staff can reset any student’s G Suite for Education password in case the student forgets their password or another need arises in which district staff need to access a student’s G Suite for Education account.

  9. Will the district have access to the drive even if they are not on the share list?

    • While District personnel have full access to anything done on the network, including work in Google G Suite for Education, it will only be reviewed when absolutely necessary to protect our students and staff.

  10. Will this new Google account sync with other personal Google accounts? Will students have access to their parents’ personal accounts?

    • Student Google accounts cannot be synced with other accounts, even on mobile devices. The only way for students to view parental accounts is if the parent either shares the login information or forgets to sign out.

  11. Can you tell us the purpose of the students' use of Google G Suite for Education? 

    • To increase collaboration among students as a part of our transition to Common Core.

  12. Will our student be required to use Google G Suite for Education for any of his classes? If so, which ones? 

    • This is up to individual teachers and/or site administrators.

  13. Is the use of Google G Suite for Education during class time or non-school hours? 

    • Hopefully, both.

  14. What is the school's plan to protect the student's information considering Google can use the information? 

    • Google can't use the information: In the past, advertising on Google G Suite for Education could be switched on and off, but now all ads have been removed from its education products. It cannot collect or use student data in Apps for Education services for advertising purposes. -- Read more here. 

  15. What is the plan, if any, to reduce the amount of push advertising via Google G Suite for Education to the students? 

    • There are no ads in Google G Suite for Education.

  16. Are the students using this site for documentation from teachers? If so, how is the redundancy factor managed with school loop? 

    • School Loop is the home-school communication vehicle for schools. GAFE is an educational tool used by teachers. It provides an easy way for teachers/students to collaborate on documents and for teachers to provide valuable feedback to a work in progress. It will also help schools use much less paper.

  17. As parents, will we have access to the same site/login as our student to track history?

    • Parents will not receive their own GAFE accounts, but they are welcome to log into their student's account.

  18. Is our student required to have an email address in order to retrieve login information?

    • No. If you would like to opt-out of a Google G Suite for Education account for your student, you can begin the process at this link.

  19. Will Google sell my child's account information to other entities such as Microsoft?

    • No. It is against the law for any online service provider to sell student information to other entities. Read more here. 

  20. If a student is signed into a CUSD Google G Suite for Education account on a home computer, but forgets to log out, will their family's subsequent internet history (sites, passwords, etc ) be logged/recorded against the student's CUSD Google account and available to the district?

    • This would only occur if the home computer was a Chromebook and the rest of the family used the Chromebook while the CUSD student was still logged into it. If the home computer is not a Chromebook the browsing history will not be recorded by the CUSD network filter. If a non-CUSD student is logged into a home Chromebook the browsing history will not be recorded by the CUSD network filter.
