Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members,
Carlsbad Unified School District will be taking part in a week long, district wide program called Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week was designed to create an awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and connecting young people to their schools and community. The theme this year is “I Make Healthy Choices” and “Unity in the Community.” Please be sure to visit the local businesses that will be supporting Red Ribbon Week by offering discounts during the week to anyone wearing this Red Ribbon Wristband.
On Tuesday October 24, 2017 we will join the Carlsbad Mayor, City Council, City Manager, Superintendent, School Board Member and principals at City Hall at 5:30 PM to take pictures at (5:45 sharp) before the meeting. We will then join them in the council chambers at the start of the meeting to have the proclamation read and for each school representative to accept. Each school in the CUSD school district will send two representatives to accept the proclamation to bring back to their school for the week celebrating Red Ribbon Week. We will then depart the meeting.
Red Ribbon Week started in 1985 as a means of honoring D.E.A. agent Enrique Camarena who lost his life in the line of duty. Today Red Ribbon Week has grown and is recognized nationally as a time for schools, communities and local businesses across the nation to come together to support our young people in making healthy choices.
In Carlsbad Unified we will focus on the many aspects of health and safety. You can take advantage of this time to open dialogue at home and in school to discuss issues like peer pressure, character and making the right choices for a healthy future as well as supporting the special activities that each school will offer.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Eshelman
