• Teacher Appreciation Day thank you from Carlsbad High School’s  ASB

Carlsbad High School’s  ASB (Associated Student Body) has a unique and powerful way to salute teachers or staff members who have made a difference in students’ lives.

An old man sees that thousands of starfish have washed up on a beach, and begins to throw them back into the ocean, one at a time. A young man remarks that there are so many starfish on the beach, there is no way that he can make a difference. But, as he threw a starfish back into the water, he said, “Well, I made a difference to that one.”

In a take-off from the starfish story, CHS’s ASB honors teachers and staff members with Senior Starfish Awards. Graduating seniors as asked to name the teacher/staff member who has been the most inspirational to them. Students can select any teacher or staff member from any school, any grade or subject. The chosen teachers and staff members receive a letter and an award for inspiring their students on Teacher Appreciation Day, and their names are recognized at graduation.

Brittany Szalkiewicz, a CHS senior, is the Student/Staff Appreciation Chair. With the assistance of the Starfish team—Ashley, Megan, and Emily—Brittany distributes the awards to hundreds of teachers here in CUSD and across the country.

“This is the second year that the ASB has given Starfish Awards,” reports Brittany. “When possible, students present certificates to teachers in their classrooms, even in elementary and middle schools. There are tears!”
