• CUSD Announces Teacher of the Year

Carlsbad Unified School District is pleased to announce that Sage Creek High School’s James Fieberg has been named Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Fieberg came to Carlsbad High School in 2001, teaching Physics, Honors Physics, and Biology, and coaching Cross Country and Track. He now teaches at Sage Creek High School, where since 2012 he has taught Honors Physics, Honors Chemistry, Principles of Engineering, AP Physics 1, and Physics.  He also serves as the Science Department Chair and the Science Olympiad Coach.

“I really believe in students ‘doing' science,” said Mr. Fieberg. “At Sage Creek we really stress the many levels of inquiry in the science classroom, and get our students to learn science by giving them the freedom to explore.”

This year Mr. Fieberg piloted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in his Physics class and taught two challenging Advanced Placement (AP) Physics classes, in addition to teaching his innovative Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering courses. He attends numerous meetings and trainings on PLTW, NGSS, and project-based CTE (Career Technical Education). He enthusiastically assists the teachers in his department with innovative curriculum and teaching strategies.

“Mr. Fieberg knows how to get the best out of his students,” said Sage Creek High School Principal Cesar Morales. “He connects with them, and gets their buy-in into applying science in engineering and physics. He has a pioneering spirit. He teaches with conviction and enthusiasm, continually tinkering with his lessons to provide the students with the utmost learning experience.”

“I am continually impressed with the high caliber of teachers in Carlsbad Unified’s classrooms,” said Superintendent Ben Churchill.  “And Mr. Fieberg truly represents the best of the best. His intelligence, leadership qualities, and passion for teaching is commendable.”

Mr. Fieberg grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and graduated with a BS in Biological Science and a Masters in Secondary Education from DePaul University.  He is married and has two daughters. A marathon runner, Mr. Fieberg also enjoys surfing, golf, and fly fishing.

Mr. Fieberg will now move forward as Carlsbad Unified’s candidate for San Diego County’s Teacher of the Year.
