2009 Board Member Biographies:
Mark Tanner, President - Email
As COO of AVID Center, Mark S. Tanner is responsible for overseeing the operations and administration of the educational non-profit that assists students in realizing their college dreams. Mr. Tanner has an extensive business background having previously worked as Chief Financial Officer for: Pepsi International; the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and Mrs. Fields Famous Brands. In addition, he was Vice President of Strategic Planning for both Pepsi Cola and Pizza Hut. Mr. Tanner also worked for 10 years for United Technologies Corporation where he led the corporate development function (mergers and acquisitions) wherein he completed over $1 billion of transactions. Prior to joining AVID, Mr. Tanner provided senior strategic and financial expertise to companies in transition as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with Executive Interim Management (EIM) in New York City. Mr. Tanner was first elected to the Carlsbad Board of Trustees in 2002 and reelected in 2006. He has served as Board President, Vice President, and currently is serving his second term as Vice President. Mr. Tanner has a B.A. from Stanford and an MBA from UCLA. He and his wife Ann have five children and two grandchildren.
Lisa Rodman, Vice President - Email
Ms. Lisa Rodman was elected to the Board of Trustees in November 2002, and re-elected November 2006, to a term that runs through 2010. She has been an advocate for excellence in education since 1992. She began as a classroom volunteer and served on numerous executive boards in schools and the community of Carlsbad. She has also trained in the District's "Lion's Quest" and Steven Covey's "The Seven Habits" programs. In the spring of 2006, she received her certification in the California School Boards Association's "Master in Governance" program. Ms. Rodman graduated from the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce's "Chamber University" in the fall of 2004. She has been an advocate for a second swim complex in Carlsbad since 1996, and continues to help guide the completion of this commitment. Ms. Rodman holds an Associate Degree in Fashion Merchandising and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication from California State University, San Marcos. Ms. Rodman worked in the clothing industry as a national sales representative and owned "Chit Chat Clothing". Rodman Productions, the family owned event planning business, is in its third year of operation.
Kelli Moors, Clerk - Email
Kelli Moors was first elected to the board in 2000 and is currently serving a term than runs through 2012. She has been a Carlsbad resident since 1982 and her daughter is a 2007 graduate of Carlsbad High School. Ms. Moors is active in the California School Boards Association (CSBA), serving as an elected member of the State Delegate Assembly and is on the advisory board of its Education Legal Alliance. In addition, she is the president of the San Diego County School Boards Association, which represents the county's 42 public school districts. Ms. Moors focuses on education advocacy and participates in the North County Coastal Legislative Action Network, is the CUSD Board representative to the California Association of Large Suburban School Districts, and meets regularly with local elected officials on behalf of students. She is proud to have been educated entirely in California's public schools, from kindergarten at Pacific Beach Elementary through San Diego State University. She is employed by Tri-City Medical Center in Strategic Services.

Nicole Pappas was first elected to the board in 1998 and re-elected in 2006 to a term that runs through 2010. Ms. Pappas is a graduate of the California School Boards Association Masters in Governance professional development program and LEAD San Diego. She represents the Board on the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education Trustee Review Board. Ms. Pappas has lived in Carlsbad since 1988. Both her children attended Carlsbad schools from Kindergarten through High School. Ms. Pappas is an active community member and serves on the Board of the North Coastal Prevention Coalition and the Optimist Club of Carlsbad, two local organizations dedicated to serving the youth of North County. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She works at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
Elisa Williamson, Member - Email
Mrs. Elisa Williamson, a 22-year Carlsbad resident, has served on the Board of Trustees since April 2000; her current term will expire in 2012. She has two children who attended Carlsbad school from kindergarten through graduation. She has served twice as President of the Board and three times as Vice President. She spearheaded the development of the District Vision Statement, the Governance Handbook, and the CUSD Continuous Improvement process. She represented the board on the Carlsbad Community Television Foundation for several years, currently serves on the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education, and received Masters in Governance certification through the California School Boards Association. She earned a Master's Degree in Business Education from Brigham Young University and worked for several years in
communications and as a part-time teacher. She is currently the Director of Marketing for a financial advisor.
Maddy Spellerberg, Student Representative to the Board of Trustees
Maddy Spellerberg is a 12th grade student at Carlsbad High, and the newly appointed 2009-10 Student Representatives to the Board of Trustees. Maddy is still somewhat of a newcomer to Carlsbad, but has already made a positive impact on the community. Maddy is eager to take on this new job as liaison between students and the school district, noting the importance of this year with the renovations of so many district schools. She is excited to be a part of these changes and to be the voice of the students. Maddy will juggle a busy course load at Carlsbad High including AP English 4, Sociology, ASB, Algebra 2, and Physics, while participating in an Academy Internship program at Amorology Weddings in San Diego. Maddy’s long term goals are to continue her education in college by majoring in Business (Marketing/PR) or Broadcast Journalism. She hopes to attend either San Diego State, Point Loma Nazarene, Chapman University or a UC close to home! Maddy has many interests including ASB, College Bound Action Plan Group, Rotary Youth Leadership, NFHS Leadership Conference attendee, (1 of 8 representing San Diego AND California!!), Miss Photogenic 2009, Miss Teen Carlsbad 2009, the Lions Club and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.
