Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten 2017-2018


Transitional Kindergarten is offered to students who reside within the Carlsbad Unified School District attendance zone and who turn the age of 5 between the dates of September 2nd and December 2nd.  



Transitional Kindergarten classes are offered in 4 locations across the Cusd and are assigned based on the neighborhood elementary school, there are no transfers for Transitional Kinder students.

  1. Aviara Oaks Elem. and Poinsettia Elem. are assigned to Poinsettia Elem.

  2. Pacific Rim Elem. and Jefferson Elem. are assigned to Jefferson Elem.

  3. Kelly Elem. and Hope Elem. are assigned to Kelly Elem.

  4. Buena Vista Elem., Calavera Hills Elem and Magnolia Elem are assigned to Buena Vista Elem.



Parents may begin with pre-enrollment via the Carlsbad Unified School District web site following the links under the section for Parents and by clicking Online Enrollment and Registration.  Following completion of the online steps, parents will be prompted to print documents from the enrollment process and bring them to the elementary site, (either the Transitional Kinder location or the neighborhood location will be happy to welcome you), along with the required documents also included in the online directions on May 4th, 2017.  


Transitional Kindergarten Defined:

Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program for those children who turn five between September 2nd and December 2nd.  The classes offer children developmentally appropriate curriculum that is a hybrid blend of California Preschool Foundations and the Kindergarten standards.  Transitional Kindergarten teachers hold valid California Teaching credentials and the teachers in Carlsbad plan together and share similar curriculum.


The difference between Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten:

Transitional Kindergarten is not a replication of kindergarten.  The Transitional Kindergarten environment includes more opportunities for social-emotional and language development through dramatic play, small group instruction, and intentional teaching through hands-on activities.  There is a focus on activities which develop large and small motor skills, attention span, and developing the ability to follow directions.  Traditional Kindergarten will focus on mastery of skills and attainment of content standards.

10:a.m. Late Owls Arrive - Recess for all

10:20 - 11:20 a.m. Both Early Birds & Late Owls

11:20 a.m. Early Birds Dismissed

11:15 - 11:35 a.m. Late Owls Snack Time

11:35 - 1:25 a.m. Late Owls

-Reading Readiness

-Math Exploration
